About LEDX
LEDX is a Swedish-made headlight in development since 2009. After many development steps LEDX only (for now) lamp Cobra has now reached its first upgrade. The idea behind the lamp is to be able to compete with the major manufacturers through a great comfort, light, and a good price.
Varför blev det en LEDX?
Oskarsström 1990, Hestra’s second stretch runner wanders through the woods in the southern Swedish 7-man relay competition. It is night and the halogen headlight only provides 20 watts, not much light for someone who likes daylight. He misses more and more checkpoints and the team lost many places. Afterwards, the answer was obvious. Anders said: NO MORE NIGHT ORIENTEERING!
But the years went by and somewhere in the back of my mind, there was an idea for a better headlight. I wanted to run with a lamp that gave a broad and long beam of light, preferably as good as daylight. It had to be easy and comfortable to wear head and preferably surpass existing lights. If I just had a really good headlight I would run again during the night.
Now and then the thought came back but the technology put an end to any ideas that might have worked, either the reflector was too big and heavy, or the battery was too large because it used up too much energy. But by 2008 the technology had caught up, the LEDs gave great light, and the Li-Ion batteries had a high energy density.
When I came in contact with a retailer of everything to do with LED technology in 2009, I began to think again and an idea of a new headlight was formed. My son, Martin, became the research subject and various solutions were tested. The idea was that Martin and me would run the Night-DM in September 2009, each with a new headlamp. DM was approaching and I worked until the very end, only a few hours before the start of the competition a lamp was finished, I let Martin take that one. Now it was exciting, was the lamp going to work? How good was the light? Before starting the light was compared to some other headlights and it turned out that our lamp was as good if not better than its competitors.
Martin ran to the start point, the rain poured down and the wind was blowing hard, a really nasty autumn storm. It was a real test, worse weather to run night orientation is difficult to imagine. Would the headlight meet the challenge? It did, Martin came in and was pleased with the lamp, even if some details needed to be improved. During the autumn and winter the development continued and a final product began to take shape. In winter and early spring of 2010 runners from clubs in both Boras and Gothenburg were running with and testing the lamps. Most reviews were positive but some details were changed. In mid-April 2010 the first lights got on the market.
